All over the world, from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , some people decide to disappear from their own lives without a trace – leaving their homes, jobs and families in the middle of the night to start a second life, often without ever looking back.

In Japan, these people are sometimes referred to as “jouhatsu”. That’s the Japanese word for “evaporation”, but it also refers to people who vanish on purpose into thin air, and continue to conceal their whereabouts – potentially for years, even decades.

“I got fed up with human relationships. I took a small suitcase and disappeared,” says 42-year-old Sugimoto, who’s just going by his family name for this story. “I just kind of escaped.” He says that back in his small hometown, everybody knew him because of his family and their prominent local business, which Sugimoto was expected to carry on. But having that role foisted upon him caused him such distress that he abruptly left town forever and told no one where he was going...

Pretty much.

Well, if that ain’t the most depressingly-appropriate thing.

How do we counter that? How do we counter with positivity?

Got a wife and kids in Baltimore, Jack, I went out for a ride and I never went back.  Like a river that don’t know where it’s flowing, I took a wrong turn and I just kept going...

Sorry. But I suppose it’s the better choice if the only other one in your mind would be to end it all...

Counter with positivity? Make a new friend of someone who really needs one.

Well, that struggle is one that hits too close to home.

I guess I just mean that, if there’s all this misery for which there is no shortage , what can we, as people (not nationality, not a society, but as humans) do that makes life better for everyone?

I’ve been at the edge of something like this, but in more of a gradual way. No secret moves or other drama , mostly just slowly fading out of people’s lives and then not being where they assumed I was . I’m pretty sure I’d be happier today if I had pushed it all the way years ago . I’d certainly have fewer headaches and more money in the bank .

I sometimes hear people talk about wanting a fresh start . I’ve been close enough to   know that most people have a very romanticized idea of what that means . I’ve accepted the unpleasant reality that i t would be way too hard for me to do it now.

As an aficionado of true crime/missing persons type mysteries, it seems like for every actual jouhatsu, the police suspect 400 more. “Oh, you came home to find your wife missing with her car, phone, purse and all personal effects still in the house, the baby sleeping upstairs, and a lot of blood on the porch? Yeah, she’s an adult, your marriage probably wasn’t as good as you thought and she just left to go start a new life. Case closed. But, hey, if you don’t hear from her in the next 72 hours, call us again and we’ll send a detective over ”

It’s nice to have a word for something. Better than “disappeared”.

I know how they feel though. Seems like life would be easier.

I think these cases are unique to the individual and uncommon enough that it’s not / shouldn’t be a societal or human issue to tackle. Other than making social and psychological therapy more available. And eliminate the stigma of needing ps y chological help.

It’s interesting that the culture seems to be set up in Japan to make a true fresh start somewhat  obtainable.

I’m sorry to hear it.

Small kindnesses go a long way. Forgiveness, thinking the best of others, letting each live their own life.

Everyone puts down roots, it takes true grit to not only recognize when those roots are drawing poison into your life, but to completely uproot and leave for more fertile ground.

Just remembered what “disappeared” means in many other countries!  I meant the relatively more benign American form of disappearing.

Some are surely running away from responsibilities (like their children), but yes, some are just removing themselves from an unhealthy situation so they have a chance to live.
